TEMPLE TACTICS

Hiphop was birthed in New York but the culture definitely maintains some Los Angeles roots. In the early '80s Uncle Jam's Army was taking over L.A.'s 16,000-seat Sports Arena with dancing souls. Breaking, based on acrobatic floor techniques, moved upward with the Los Angles influence of popping and locking. While, the first real Los Angeles' Hiphop sound tended to be electro-pop influenced by Afrika Bambaataa's early hits. It would not be until the late '80s that Los Angeles would begin to lay the foundation for what would be called gangsta rap.

WEST COAST HIPHOP HISTORICAL SITES

TEMPLE TACTICS

It was the Golden Era of Hiphop and the East Coast with its distinct musical sound, lyrical content, and street fashion, had become Hiphop Kulture's blueprint for record sales and mainstream success. Yet, during the mid-1980s, on the West Coast, Los Angeles becomes devastated by a crack epidemic, gangs, police brutality, and racial unrest. It would be the economically marginalized neighborhoods of Los Angeles and the social issues affecting communities of color that truly altered the development and direction of West Coast HipHop Kulture and music into mainstream society.

Throughout Southern California, it was social and economic issues that created locations for Hiphop's seed to manifest. Today, those Hiphop seeds have given way to the creation of West Coast Hiphop Kulture and music. These various southern California locations, some still in existence, others lost to commercial development, became the springboard for West Coast Hiphop.
